The Wrackleford Estate is set in the magnificent Dorset
Downlands just north of the county town of Dorchester running from the lush water meadows in the Frome Valley to the chalk uplands, and traditional gorse downlands on the hills. The agricultural land is interspersed with deep valleys, and mature broadleaf woodland.
Purchased originally by Alfred Pope in the mid 19th century following the family’s move from West Dorset to Dorchester in order to develop the family brewing interests into which later became Eldridge Pope. He was passionate about his Fieldsports with the Estate offering wonderful hunting, shooting and fishing - the fishing at that time covered the Frome, Sydling Brook, Wrackle and a section of the Cerne. His vision for the Estate included the planting of over 300,000 trees in small plantation blocks with pheasant shooting very much in mind - much of this programme was carried out well into his 70s and 80s. |
