River Condition Report
The Wrackleford Estate

The promise of warmer softer days are here....

(or will be once this much needed rain has stopped !!)

And with them comes the opportunity to spend some time on the river bank  with a rod in your hand !

Our fishing season began at7 Hatches the beginning of the month and runs until 15th of October.  This season we have made a number of improvements which I hope that all our guests will enjoy.

Access points have been improved, but most significantly the bank margin has now been increased to around 20ft from fence to river - that has been a lot of fence posts to move along the entire fishery but the job is now almost complete and the end product significantly improves each of the beats.

All the best and I look forward to meeting up with you on the river bank,
Oliver Pope

The River Frome Water Flows
Lower than normal, but plenty of water.
There have been numerous reports of how little water there is in the UK river systems at the moment, with some flow monitoring systems on different rivers showing a worrying lack of water.

The South West received around 70% of expected rainfall last year with corresponding ground water stocks and flows lower than we would like.   Like waiting for a bus to come we have been waiting for rain for the last few weeks with nothing coming, and now in the last week we have finally had some proper rainfall which will certainly help.

Good clarity and renunculous
I have spent a considerable time on the river over the last few weeks and have been impressed by the clarity and growth of renunculous. Poor weed growth tends to go with lower flows, however areas of the Fishery like the lower section of the Home beat are displaying wonderful growth.

One of the things that I always enjoy about the Frome at Wrackleford is the variety it offers - the depth can vary from a shallow riffle over a gravel bed to a deep hole that even chest waders cannot cope with.   The lower flows have meant the river levels correspondingly lower, but there is plenty of depth throughout the system at the moment.

Grannom hatches
The last few weeks have had warmer days with the fish rising to grannom during the day, with the evenings being a little cool for prolonged late evening fishing.

A Fisherman's Journey......

Tony Mair has set out to catch a fish in every county of the UK, and despite an unconvincing first visit elsewhere on the Frome he returned and fished the Wrackleford Home Beat recently with an altogether different result.

"My second visit to the Frome was entirely better….memorable, fulfilling and a complete joy!"

Despite a slightly adverse condition day the river fished well and gave for a completely memorable experience, particulary the second fish :

"The second, fought like a demon, and I believe it to be the largest brown I have taken from an English river at between 2 ½ and 2 ¾ lbs….and even better"

You can find out more about his adventures around the country and read the full blog article on his visit at http://afishermansjourney.com/2011/06/05/dorset/

Fieldsports TV review the Frome
The Fieldsports TV channel recently visited the Frome at Wrackleford to compare the fishing on a less well known river to the delights of the world famous Test in Hampshire.  Gin clear waters at Wrackleford, with fish rising to variety of flies - the full programme can be viewed at : www.fieldsportschannel.tv/

Mayfly Heaven

Whilst the timing of the first show of Mayfly was about normal, the inconsistency of the weather has prevented really good hatches ...... until now.  I was out on the river last night, with hundreds of Mayfly fluttering around and the fish really tucking in.  If you only fish at peak Mayfly time - now is your moment !!

The weather has treated the fishing badly this year, first we had the unbroken period of cold north winds, then the bright hot sun which tipped the balance too far the other way - I am not sure I am ever satisfied.

The fish are certainly feeding early to mid morning, then dropping off until mid to late afternoon until the temperature drops too much.  Last night it began to quieten down by around 7.00pm, a little earlier than recent days brought on by the stronger colder wind.

Escape to the Country - BBC Radio 4

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen's Escape to the Country - "The Sporting Estate"

From 1800, the remote, bleak, cold country hall or mansion, complete with its shivering, long-faced hounds was given a makeover - often acquired with new money, it became a place for ladies and gentlemen from the city to congregate and socialise. The country estate was a fantastic place to spend time together, to network, show off your political connections, along with the fine crystal and bespoke china.

It was the heyday of Victorian foxhunting, with increasing numbers of visitors flocking from all over Britain and overseas to hunt in the Shires that were a "sea of grass" at that time.

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert began regular visits to Balmoral from 1848 and grouse shooting became a passion for the newly wealthy. Their son Edward Albert, actually bought Sandringham to develop drive shooting.a pleasure the chubby king could enjoy sitting down.

This programme explores how field sports changed the appearance of the countryside and contributed to the idea of the country house as a 'seat of social and political power'.

With Lady Carnarvon at Highclere Castle and Oliver Pope at the Wrackleford Estate, Dorchester.
